What Is A Head Shop?
Head Shops were retail establishments of mythical repute in the 60's and 70's. Their contents were shrouded with mystery and whispered rumors of exotic merchandise entertained both the clients that frequented their portals and those who had no clue what lay inside because they were never brave enough to enter a Head Shop. And then, glowing lava lamps and huge signs for waterbeds started showing up in their windows.
Headshop means ?
The Term Headshop may have originated in San Francisco in 1966 with a store that retailed counter-culture merchandise like the comics of Richard Crumb, imported paraphernalia for smoking tobacco and herbs, as well as posters, candles, incense, lava lamps, and essential oils. Today Head Shop means that merchandise stemming from neutral or eco-friendly resources, waterbeds, earth shoes, alternative music and beautiful clothing and decorative house wares and furniture are available for sale.
With the hippies of the 60's and 70's maturing into the ecologically aware baby boomers of the late 70's to the present, Head Shops have transformed into fun, conservation conscious establishments filled with delightful gifts and practical items for home use. The Head Shop, also called a smoke shop, had almost died out until the advent of the waterbed and the rise of the need to transform society's waste and throw away mentality to conservationism and the hottest merchandising in the market today; greening.
Are Head Shops Illegal?
The answer to that question of course is quite simple. Of course not or they would never have opened their doors. And the answer to the second rumored myth is the same. No, Head Shops do not sell illegal substances. They would never have survived the first 8 hour day of being open. In fact, brick and mortar Head Shops as well as those online are very astringent in how they refer to their products for sale and are particular in who shops in their stores.
Throughout Head Shops in real and virtual space, signs are posted everywhere that state that the product is for sale for the use of tobacco only and not for use with any illegal substances. Some stores will even ban customers who are found referring to the head shop premises as locations to buy products for the use of illegal drugs. Head Shops today are strict in their presentation as respectable retail establishments.
